STRATEGY & TECHNOLOGY

KINARIS combines protein structure determination and target-based rational drug design with chemical synthesis to generate a new class of therapeutic drugs for the treatment of various myosin-associated diseases.

KINARIS has initially focused the drug development process on the generation of specific inhibitors against parasitic myosins. This is being realized through the establishment of an interdisciplinary infrastructure embracing three closely interacting departments:

  • Cell Technology & Pharmacology (CTP)

  • Enzymology, Molecular Structure & Design (EMSD)

EMSD is responsible for a diverse set of activities concerning discovery and characterization of small molecule-protein and protein-protein interactions. EMSD selects and produces protein targets for use in high throughput screening, utilizing expression systems and natural sources. The department assays candidate compounds and determines the compounds mechanism of action. A variety of techniques such as enzyme and transient kinetics, fluorescence spectroscopy, protein crystallography, and molecular modeling are employed to gain detailed insights into protein-compound interactions and to aid compound prioritization.
